| Following development of an emergency response plan, a training program is required for responders to ensure the plan can be put into operation. The following items need to be known to develop the training program:
The purpose of the training program is to ensure emergency response and crisis management team members are familiar with the emergency plan, their roles and responsibilities, and that they have the required skills and abilities to perform their tasks effectively. A gap analysis should be conducted for emergency response and crisis management team members and a training program developed to meet individual team members needs. The training program may include a combination of self study, computer interactive training, distance learning, group training, course attendance or even certification by an external organization. An effective program should include initial and ongoing refresher training to ensure team members remain proficient. As response to emergency incidents normally involves public and private sector responders, where possible joint training should be undertaken to build responder confidence. For efficiency and credibility, existing material designed to meet current standards should be used with custom programs being developed when required.
